This. I think it's much more fun if we the reader have as little idea what's going on as Fox-the-character, and we get to figure it out along with her. A guide character doesn't even necessarily have to provide exposition; zie can drop cryptic warnings or advice that lets Fox piece the bits together. (Can I also say that, as a reader, I really appreciate when authors don't assume I have an IQ of 10 and allow inference and mystery-solving on my part, rather than THIS IS HOW IT WORKS OKAY)
